  26. I realize that your posting was flame bait, but I couldn't resist.  Almost all software
  27. for windows runs on Windows NT, and it doesn't require an incredible machine like everyone
  28. seems to imply.  It is also much suppior to Windows 95, as an operating system.  It doesn't
  29. have all of the latest bells and whistles that Microsoft put in '95, but the system its self
  30. is much better.

  32. To illustrate my first two points, I run DOS/Windows3.1, Windows 95, and Windows NT (also
  33. linux) on my computer at home.  My computer is a 33MHZ 386sx with 14MB of memory.  Windows NT
  34. runs fine on it, actually a little better than Windows 95.  I can run all of my software
  35. under Windows NT except for my childrens DOS games and Corel PhotoPaint 4.0.  For the DOS games
  36. I boot into DOS.  If I really needed PhotoPaint under NT I could upgrade to V6.0.  Everything
  37. else runs better, including my word processor, spreadsheat, quicken, development tools
  38. (Borland), my dialup internet access acount, and all of the little internet apps I run.
  39. In my opinion, Windows NT is almost a requirement for doing Windows development without going
  40. mad.  Having a nice crash resistant system while testing and debuging new code is a must.
  41. Of course, I started out developing on unix and VMS, so I might be slightly biased against
  42. developing on a system that can crash because of a bad pointer in some new code.

  44. Oh yea, one last point.  Even though I installed Windows 95, I haven't started using it yet.
  45. I can't get all of the kids games to work properly under it.  So, I would still have to boot
  46. to DOS to run them, just like in NT.  Also, because of some of my own hacks and utilities
  47. that I wrote to make Windows a little nicer, I would actually lose some functionality by moving
  48. my kids from dos/windows3.1 to Windows 95 until I manage to work out all of the little
  49. additions that I have made.
