- I realize that your posting was flame bait, but I couldn't resist. Almost all software
- for windows runs on Windows NT, and it doesn't require an incredible machine like everyone
- seems to imply. It is also much suppior to Windows 95, as an operating system. It doesn't
- have all of the latest bells and whistles that Microsoft put in '95, but the system its self
- is much better.
-
- To illustrate my first two points, I run DOS/Windows3.1, Windows 95, and Windows NT (also
- linux) on my computer at home. My computer is a 33MHZ 386sx with 14MB of memory. Windows NT
- runs fine on it, actually a little better than Windows 95. I can run all of my software
- under Windows NT except for my childrens DOS games and Corel PhotoPaint 4.0. For the DOS games
- I boot into DOS. If I really needed PhotoPaint under NT I could upgrade to V6.0. Everything
- else runs better, including my word processor, spreadsheat, quicken, development tools
- (Borland), my dialup internet access acount, and all of the little internet apps I run.
- In my opinion, Windows NT is almost a requirement for doing Windows development without going
- mad. Having a nice crash resistant system while testing and debuging new code is a must.
- Of course, I started out developing on unix and VMS, so I might be slightly biased against
- developing on a system that can crash because of a bad pointer in some new code.
-
- Oh yea, one last point. Even though I installed Windows 95, I haven't started using it yet.
- I can't get all of the kids games to work properly under it. So, I would still have to boot
- to DOS to run them, just like in NT. Also, because of some of my own hacks and utilities
- that I wrote to make Windows a little nicer, I would actually lose some functionality by moving
- my kids from dos/windows3.1 to Windows 95 until I manage to work out all of the little
- additions that I have made.
-
- Thanks for listening,
